New York Sour Recipe
This weekend Clyde and I are off to New York celebrate our 20th wedding anniversary. I have never been, so it’s all new and exciting. Clyde has been a couple of times but not since the 90’s, so I expect it’s changed a little. We have actually been together 30 years *I know, I look so young*, so I think the least we deserve is a weekend away from the hustle and bustle of real life. I am excited about the food, the shopping and, of course, the cocktails. So, to celebrate our little trip away, today’s Friday Cocktail is a New York Sour.
I feel deprived for not knowing of a New York Sour before now. I know I say this most weeks *old lush* but this really is a delicious drink and a super interesting mix. This features bourbon again, which I know is a repeat offender here on Lucy Loves, but it’s a house favourite and how could I not feature an amusingly titled cocktail given our travel plans. This bourbon is mixed with fresh lemon juice, a touch of sugar syrup then topped up with a shot of red wine. The wine is poured over the back of a spoon, Irish Coffee stylie, which creates an artistic layer on the top of your drink.
Stylish and tasty, what more could you want from your Friday Cocktail. I will try not to be too much of a New York bore after our trip, but brace yourself for at least a couple of landmark selfies on my Instagram this weekend, so do unfollow *don’t you bloody dare* if you must.
Look at that, what a lovely line up this week. The recipe called for a nice fruity red for this cocktail, so this Shiraz was just perfect.
Make a start with your cocktail shaker. Or a jar, if you can’t find your cocktail shaker in the crappy mess that is your kitchen *just me then*. Add a big handful of ice.
Next, pour in the shot of bourbon and sugar syrup for a hint of sweetness.
Squeeze in your fresh lemon juice then it’s time to shake your shaker, or jar.
When the cocktail is chilled, add some more ice to a tumbler then pour in your bourbon mix.
Next, it’s time for the red wine layer. Sadly, pouring this over the back of a spoon was a near impossible procedure to photograph at the same time, so use your imagination and it’s not hard to do, if I can manage it.
Try not to guzzle this sophisticated little number in one go. I promise I didn’t.
Now I have been introduced to a New York Sour, it will become a regular on my Friday Cocktail list. This is such a fresh tasting drink with a hint of warmth from the wine, perfect for a chilly December night. I just hope I love the town as much as I love its sour. I’ll keep you posted.

New York Sour Recipe
Makes 1
You will need a cocktail shaker/jar and a tumbler
Ice for the shaker and the glass
40ml Bourbon
25ml fresh lemon juice
1 1/2 tablespoons simple syrup – you can make this by heating up one part water one part sugar until the sugar dissolves, then allow to cool
25ml red wine, a Shiraz is perfect here
Take your cocktail shaker and add a good handful of ice. Pour in the bourbon, lemon juice and simple syrup. Shake until the shaker is good and chilled.
Add some more ice into your tumbler then pour on the contents of the shaker. Carefully pour the red wine, over the back of a spoon, onto the bourbon mix, slowly, so the wine forms a layer. Sip and enjoy this elegant cocktail.
